Impact acquires forward Jack McInerney in trade with Philadelphia Union

MONTREAL – The Montreal Impact announced on Friday the acquisition of striker Jack McInerney from the Philadelphia Union in return for forward Andrew Wenger.

McInerney, a 21-year-old American, is in his 5th season in MLS after being drafted by the Union in the first round, seventh overall, in the 2010 SuperDraft.

Prior to joining the bleu-blanc-noir, he tallied 25 goals and four assists in 95 games with the Philadelphia Union, including 53 starts, and 5,059 minutes played. In addition, he scored three times in six Lamar Hunt U.S. Open matches.

“We’d like to thank Andrew for everything he did both on and off the field for this club,” said Impact sporting director Nick De Santis. “He is a very talented player who played an important role in the history of this club as we transitioned into MLS. We wish him all the best moving forward.”

“We are extremely pleased to be able to bring in a player of Jack McInerney’s quality,” added De Santis. “At a young age, he’s already showed the ability to score goals in this league and we feel his qualities and soccer sense fit well within our style of play.”

McInerney has been the Union's leading scorer over the past two seasons. In 2013, he scored 12 goals in 25 games, 19 as a starter, and was named to the MLS All-Star team that faced off against AS Roma. In the previous season, he scored eight goals in 25 games.

So far this season, he has one goal and one assist in four starts.

On the international scene, McInerney was a member of the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup winning U.S. team. Prior to that, he played for the U23 and U20 teams after making a name for himself with the U17 national team, scoring 11 goals in 15 games played, four of which were during the U17 World Cup in 2009.
