Impact U17 begins GA Cup qualifying

Montreal returns with a point after two games

It wasn’t the ideal to start for Jason Di Tullio’s men, this weekend in Toronto, when qualifying for the 13th edition of the Generation adidas Cup kicked off.

The Impact U17, in Group D alongside seven other MLS clubs, took on New York City FC on Saturday, before facing the Columbus Crew SC on Monday, two days later.

Results

Montreal Impact 0-2 New York City FC
Montreal Impact 3-4 Columbus Crew SC (penalty shoot-out)

After suffering a loss to the New York representatives to kick off the campaign, the Impact U17 fared better against the Crew SC, with their leading goalscorer, Mouhamadou Kane, tying the game at three from the spot with half an hour to go.

In the end, following a 3-3 draw, the Ohio team was able to edge out Montreal in the penalty shootout, although the Impact U17 does add a point to the bank because of the draw.

Montreal now ranks fifth in its group with 1 point, while the group leaders, New York City FC, lead the way with eight points. Last year, the Impact lost its opening games of GA Cup qualifying but went on to win three of the next four games on its way to its first ever qualification to the Champions Division of the Generation adidas Cup.

The top two teams from each group will advance to play in Division 1 of the 2020 Generation adidas Cup Finals at the Toyota Soccer Center in Frisco, Texas. The third and fourth placed teams from each group will play in Division 2 and the remaining teams will play in Division 3.

Upcoming games

The qualifying process for the Impact continues on November 17, when Montreal will host Toronto FC at Centre Nutrilait. The three final games will be played from February 14 to 17, in Atlanta, against the other teams in the group.
