Impact midfielder has missed three weeks with abdominal injury

Samuel Piette didn’t mince his words, talking to the media Tuesday morning. The young Canadian international has missed the past three weeks with an abdominal injury suffered during the game against Toronto FC, his longest absence from play since joining the Impact in 2017.

Asked whether or not he’ll be ready to go when the Impact hosts Cavalry FC, this Wednesday at 7:30pm (TICKETS – 98.5, TSN 690), this is what he had to say.

“I feel good,” said Piette. “This injury kept me on the sidelines for long enough, too long for my liking. I’m able to play and I’m available for the game against Cavalry FC.”

The Impact has become accustomed to having Piette around. The number six has become an essential part of the team’s midfield, breaking a club record by making 51 consecutive appearances in the regular season, before he was forced to miss a game due to an accumulation of yellow cards.

Despite being available and feeling better, it’s still unclear whether or not he’ll feature in tonight’s semi-final clash.

“I want to get back on the field as soon as possible,” added Piette. “In the end, it’s the coach’s decision. But I want to accumulate minutes and get back into it as quickly as possible. It’s very abnormal for me to have missed so much time.”

Rémi Garde’s men get Piette back at a crucial time; sitting in sixth in the Eastern Conference standings with 33 points, the Impact is in playoff position for now, although the New England Revolution and Toronto FC are breathing down their necks. With nine games remaining, every single point will be crucial until the end of the season.

“We’re in the playoff race and we’re in the semifinals of the Canadian championship. There are a lot of good things that can happen for us. It’s up to us to keep going. We’re not at the bottom of the standings with nothing to play for. It’s very important to fight until the end.”
