The Americans will take on Mexico this Sunday at 9pm

From the second this tournament started, these were the teams to beat. Now, a new chapter of the historic rivalry will unfold this Sunday at 9pm, at Soldier Field in Chicago, when the United States takes on Mexico. And the Impact’s Daniel Lovitz will be a part of it.

“This Mexico game will be different,” said Daniel Lovitz, speaking to Impact Media following their semifinals win. “It’s important to understand the energy and history surrounding the matchup. I think it will be a great test, one we’re ready for. I’m just honoured and excited for an opportunity to compete against an opponent like Mexico in a game like this. The guys can’t wait.”

It marks Lovitz’s first major tournament with the USMNT, after the full-back was called up for his first camp in the beginning of 2019. It also marks a first major tournament for new head coach Gregg Berhalter, the former Columbus Crew SC boss. It’s been smooth sailing however thus far for the Stars and Stripes, who have won every single game en route to their 11th Gold Cup final.

“We’ve been very deliberate in our approach to all phases of the tournament,” added Lovitz. “We set goals that dictated our performances throughout the group stage and gave us a way to measure our progress. We’ve been able to accomplish those, but now we just focus on the final.”

Following the Impact

It’s been awhile since we’ve seen Daniel Lovitz in an Impact uniform. The American international joined his national side in the beginning of June, missing the past three games. Lovitz will miss his fourth as the Impact hosts Minnesota United FC this Saturday at 7:30pm (TICKETS – TVA Sports, 98.5, TSN 690), although he’ll be back for their upcoming MLS game against the rival, Toronto FC, on July 13 (TICKETS – TVA Sports, TSN, 98.5, TSN 690).

“It’s a bit of a weird feel to watch the games live, and even more so to watch recordings of the games I missed,” explained Lovitz. “These last few performances have been amazing to watch. Everyone knows how important this stretch of the season is. We have a strong group. It’s been a pleasure to watch from afar but I’m very much looking forward to getting back to work for my club.”
