MONTREAL – Midfielder Orji Okwonkwo has been called up by the Nigeria U23 national team for two 2019 U23 Africa Cup of Nations qualification games against Libya, on Friday, March 22, in Tunis, and Monday, March 25, in Bayelsa State.
Okwonkwo, 21, scored his first career goal with the Impact last Saturday in a 3-1 win in Orlando. He has started all three games this season, playing 189 minutes and recording eight shots, including four on target.
At the international level, he won the FIFA U17 World Cup in 2015, in Chile, with the Nigeria U17 team, appearing in five games throughout the tournament. He scored a goal in a 4-2 win against Mexico in the semifinals.
Nigeria is trying to qualify for the 2019 U23 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be played next November
