Ambroise Oyongo, master of Africa

Oyongo champion Afrique

The Cameroonian path in the Africa Cup of Nations ended in the best of ways, on Sunday in Libreville, Gabon. Lead at half-time, the Indomitable Lions and Ambroise Oyongo mounted a memorable comeback in the second half to win the final by a 2-1 score.

A few instants before the final whistles, Vincent Aboubakar (Beşiktaş JK) brought glory to Cameroon with a little gem of a goal, putting a long ball under his spell with his chest before lobbing it over Ali Gabr’s head and dispatching a bouncing volley in the bottom corner. That was his very first goal –and only goal – of the tournament, but what a goal!

As well as hoisting the Africa Cup of Nations, Cameroon qualifies for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, in Russia. Used as preparation for the World Cup, this tournament opposes the hosts to the holding world champions and the most recent continental winners. This summer, from June 17 to July 2, the competition will put under the spotlight Russia, Germany, Australia, Chile, Mexico, New Zealand, Portugal and Cameroon.

Ambroise Oyongo will soon join the Montreal Impact squad to prepare for the 2017 MLS season.
