IMFC could clinch playoff spot this week

donadel celebration

As the 2015 MLS playoffs approach, the Impact is in position to clinch its second postseason berth in just four seasons and could still finish as high as second in the Eastern Conference.

Holding down the final spot in the Eastern Conference with 45 points, Montreal can clinch with an Orlando loss or tie as soon as Friday against New York City FC, or with a win against New England on Saturday.

Currently, only three points separate IMFC from the second seed  and D.C. United (48 points), with New England in third (47), the Columbus Crew SC (47) in fourth and Toronto FC (46) in fifth. All teams have only two games remaining except for TFC, which has one game in hand.

So a win on Saturday would not only clinch a playoff spot for the Bleu-blanc-noir, but they would also leapfrog the Revs in the standings.

And if IMFC manages to win both of its final games, 51 total points are up for grabs.

With Columbus playing both Toronto and D.C. United down the stretch, and with IMFC hosting TFC on Decision Day, the Impact could climb to second place in the East. If D.C. manages only three points in its last two games, and if Columbus and Toronto earn a maximum of four points in their next two games, the Impact would be in the driver’s seat.

Holding the tiebreakers (wins, goal differential) in the above scenarios, IMFC could end the regular season with a buy and field advantage in the Conference semifinal round.

But first thing’s first. This Saturday, IMFC needs to top the Revs.
