The Montreal Impact heads to the big apple to take on expansion side New York City FC for the very first time this Saturday at 7pm at the famed Yankee Stadium (TVA Sports 2, CJAD 800), and extend its winning streak to three games.
“When we maintain our level of intensity, we’ll get results,” explained Patrice Bernier. “We’ve found a mentality of not wanting to lose. We have to go there with the desire to create a sequence of success on the road. It’s an Eastern Conference battle and we want to ensure that we are in position to take advantage of our games in hand and put some more distance between us and New York.”
Although NYCFC is playing in a famous arena like Yankee Stadium, it’s business as usual for the Impact.
“The difficulty for an expansion team is to find some chemistry after bringing in players from here and there to fill out the roster,” explained Wandrille Lefèvre. “It doesn’t matter if it’s an expansion team going through some difficulties or that they have fantastic players like David Villa in attack, they are another MLS team and we have to take them serious and go there to win the game.”
The Argentine duo of Andrés Romero and Ignacio Piatti has led the charge for IMFC, winning four of its last five games. Romero has three goals and one assist in his last four matches, while Nacho has amassed two goals and three assists in his last five.
Impact midfielder Marco Donadel will miss the weekend’s tilt due to a fifth yellow card received last weekend in Columbus.
New York City FC is just 2-7-5 over its first 14 games, sitting in last place in the entire league, although the club did manage to win its most recent game, by a 2-1 score in Philadelphia last weekend.
Designated Player and former Spanish international David Villa has scored three times and added two assists in his first season in MLS, while former Impact defender Jeb Brovsky has started 12 of his 13 games played this season.
The Impact will play its next game at Stade Saputo at 8pm on Saturday, June 20, against Orlando City SC and international start Kaka.
