Opponent watch: Hassli nearing return

Eric Hassli Toronto FC

Forward Eric Hassli has missed TFC’s past three league games after he suffered an ankle injury in a 1-1 draw against Philadelphia. It was Hassli’s second game after he missed two games because of a rib injury picked up in a 2-1 loss at Columbus on Aug. 22.

However, the big Frenchman has been a factor when he has played, scoring three goals with two assists in six games since he was acquired in a July 20 trade with Vancouver, two days after Toronto’s last win in league play. Since beating Colorado 2-1, Toronto hasn’t won in 12 MLS games, losing nine.

Hassli helped his former team defeat the Impact 2-0 in its first ever game in MLS at BC Place back on March 10. The French striker assisted on the Whitecaps FC opening goal in that game and was a dominant force physically.

His return would be a welcome one because forward Ryan Johnson is suspended for the game for yellow-card accumulation and fellow attacker Quincy Amarikwa is doubtful because of a hamstring injury picked up in the 1-0 loss to D.C. United last weekend.

Canadian defender Asthone Morgan may also miss the game due to the flu.

Like father, like son

The Montreal Impact U21 team defeated TFC Academy 2-0 last Sunday in the opening round of the playoffs to earn a berth in the semi-finals of the Canadian Soccer League.
