Sebrango goes from tryout to stand out

Eduardo Sebrango Portland Timbers

Impact forward Eduardo Sebrango started 2012 with an invitation to training camp, summoned by head coach Jesse Marsch and his coaching staff to tryout with the club, with no guarantees on where he might fit in.

But he was just happy to be on the pitch on the opening day of training camp on January 16, the first official on field day for the team as it began its journey towards its inaugural game in Major League Soccer. And for Sebrango, he was experience a first of his own…the first time he had to try out for a team as an adult players, a first since his early teenage days back in Sancti Spiritus.

“I’m excited about the opportunity. How can I not be?” he said at the time. “I feel good. I’m healthy. I’ve been working really hard to get ready. I’m going to take advantage of the opportunity. I plan to do my best and we’ll see what happens.”

Well, what happened was that Sebrango showed the technical staff enough to earn an MLS contract with the team where he spent the majority of his career. He was one of the team’s most dangerous offensive threats over the first two training camp tours in Mexico and California and was one of the hardest workers too.

And as he made his way into Stade Saputo to officially put pen to paper on his contract on Monday, he was smiling from ear to ear like a kid in a candy store.

“I’m honoured to be a part of this with the Impact,” he said. “I’ve been through some up and downs with the team over the years, the club had some hard times, and it’s so great to be a part of its greatest success.”

Now, the toughest choice remaining for the Impact’s active leading scorer is what number to don for his first season in MLS.
