“In professional sports, the difference between a win and a loss is often very thin and as we have seen lately, effort does not guarantee success,” said Impact president Joey Saputo. “Following discussions with Nick in the last few days, he informed me of his decision to resign from his head coach duties. Together, we decided to make significant changes within the technical team.”
De Santis will be in charge of the technical division of the club and will have as main functions the supervision of the technical team, the management of the team and reserve team, the Trois-Rivières Attak, as well as administrative duties. His mandate will also be to consolidate the Quebec soccer pyramid at all levels.
De Santis was finalist for the USL D1 Coach of the Year award in his first three seasons at the helm of the Impact (2004-2006) and won the award in 2005. He led Montreal to the league championship in 2004, as well as the regular-season title in 2005 and 2006.
He directed his 100th regular season game as the head coach of the Montreal Impact on June 1, 2007, in a 0-0 tie against the Vancouver Whitecaps. He resigned with a record of 69 wins, 29 losses and 30 ties, in 128 games, having coached his last game, Saturday, in Charleston.
