Young Quebec prospects Alex Surprenant and Cristian Nunez join the Impact

“We are happy to add these young talented players to our line-up,” said Montreal Impact head coach Nick De Santis. “Both are motivated and have a positive attitude, in addition to great technical, tactical and physical qualities. They certainly have a bright future ahead of them. We have to give them time to develop, but they will gain experience with the upcoming exhibition games.”

In 2007, the 18-year-old Surprenant played with the Impact reserve team, the Trois-Rivières Attak, in the Canadian Soccer League. He started the 21 games he played with the Attak for a total of 1787 minutes of play. The St-Alexandre resident, in the Monteregie region, also scored two goals. Surprenant was called back by the Impact in July but did not play a game.

“I’m very happy to officially join the Impact,” said Surprenant. “I kicked off the training camp in good shape and so far it’s going very well. My objective was to make the team this year. I will now try to take a spot on the starting line-up but I don’t want to skip steps. I know that I need to gain experience but I will work hard.”

Nunez, a 19-year-old Montreal native, played 90 minutes in the 13 games he played with the Toronto FC reserve team, in the Major League Soccer (MLS). He tallied one assist, April 15, 2007, against the New England Revolution reserve squad. Last summer, the player from Montreal-Concordia took part in the U20 World Cup with the Canadian team, playing the first two games against Chile and Austria.

“It’s an honour for me to have the chance to play for the Impact,” said Nunez. “I’m motivated and confident for next season. I think that the Impact’s game will fit more with my game because I’m a player who likes to control the ball.”

The Impact is continuing its training camp in the city of Fiuggi, in Italy, in preparation for its first exhibition game, this Thursday, against Arezzo (Serie C1 –third division).
