Forward Charles Gbeke is named Player of the Week

Last Friday, Gbeke was involved in the two goals scored by the Impact in a 2-0 win against his former team, the Rochester Raging Rhinos, at Paetec Park. Gbeke scored the game-winning goal (70th minute) and then added an assist on the second goal scored by defender Gabriel Gervais (73rd minute), only a few minutes after he came into the game.

“I’m happy to receive this honour but the most important thing for me is that the team wins,” said Gbeke. “I will not be completely happy before the team wins the championship. There is still a lot of work to do and I’m training hard to be ready for the playoffs. I know that if I score goals, I will contribute to the team’s success.”

Native from Ivory Coast, the Quebec forward leads the Impact in goals (8) and points (17). He also leads the team in terms of game-winning goals (4), shots (65) and fouls (43).

Gbeke is also second in the First Division United Soccer Leagues goal leaders, one goal behind Rochester Raging Rhinos forward Hamed Diallo.

Note that Gbeke played the 2006 season in Rochester, tallying two goals and one assist in 21 games (929 minutes played).

Gbeke will face his former teammates for the third time this season on Friday, as the Impact will face Rochester at Claude-Robillard Sports Complex, at 8 pm (Radio-Canada, FSW, Sirius, CJAD 800).
