California 2 Impact 0

Victory forward Josh Hansen opened the score in the 59th minute and midfielder Yuri Morales scored the insurance goal in the 84th minute.

The Montreal Impact had to play a man down from the 43rd minute, following the ejection of defender Mauricio Vincello, who received his second yellow card of the game for tackling Victory defender Luis Aguilar.

Head coach Nick De Santis was also expelled from the match in the 71st minute after the referee disallowed a goal due to an offside.

“To play with 10 men for almost an hour is difficult for the players,” said Impact assistant coach Peter Pinizzotto. “I think the players gave it all they had but we were unlucky. It’s unfortunate for the team and it’s disappointing. We are not playing with consistency and we have to find the solution to this problem.”

“We had good scoring chances but the ball would not go in,” said midfielder Antonio Ribeiro. “On their side, they had two great chances and it was decisive. It is just a bad day.”

“We have to show more discipline,” said forward Charles Gbeke. “We can’t take a red card against a team that plays well. They were not dangerous when we were down with 10 men but we gave them the opportunity to win the game. It is not an easy league to play in, so we need discipline. We will learn from it in the future.”

Goalkeeper Andrew Weber, who was playing his third game this season, suffered his first loss this year. He faced a total of eleven shots.

With 12,255 spectators, it was the best crowd in Impact history for a home game away from Claude-Robillard Sports Complex.

This was the first Impact loss in 11 home games played away from Montreal (9-1-1).

The Montreal Impact will play its next game Sunday, July 8, against the Carolina RailHawks, the other USL First Division expansion franchise, at Sherbrooke University Stadium, at 4 pm (Télévision de Radio-Canada, Sirius, CJAD 800).
