Impact acquires forward Alen Marcina

Marcina, a 27-year-old Canadian, is playing his second season in the United Soccer Leagues First Division. Last year, he ended the season as the Islanders goal leader, with 13 goals in 27 games (2007 minutes of play). This season, he has tallied one goal and two assists, for four points, in eight games (521 minutes).

“I think he’s a good addition to our line-up,” said Montreal Impact head coach Nick De Santis. “Marcina is a player who has shown his offensive qualities by scoring 13 goals last year. He has speed and he is dangerous around the net. We will give him the time to adapt to our team, which is already made up of many talented players.”

Marcina ended his four-season college career finishing top scorer for Barry University, every year. He then joined the ranks of the Ottawa Wizards, in the Canadian Soccer League, scoring nine goals in 10 games. Marcina also played for Paok FC, a first division club in Greece. He also played for IA, in Iceland, for FC Schweinfurt, in Germany, for Herfolge Boldklub, in Denmark, as well as for the New Zealand Knights, in Australia.

Lars Lyssand, who did not report to the Impact this year, played two seasons with Montreal (2005-2006), for a total of 53 games (3926 minutes), tallying two goals and four assists.

Marcina could join his new teammates as of Friday, for the game against Charleston. The Impact (4-1-4) will play its 10th game of the season (6th of 14 at home) against the Battery (3-3-3), at 7 pm (Télévision de Radio-Canada, Sirius, CJAD 800, USLlive.com).

NICK DE SANTIS SUSPENDED
Impact head coach Nick De Santis will not be on the bench for Friday’s match-up against Charleston. De Santis is serving a one-game suspension following an exchange he had with the referees, after last Friday’s game against the Portland Timbers. The Impact was shut out 1-0, following a controversial penalty, awarded in the second half. Assistant coach Peter Pinizzotto will be at the helm of the team.
