1,000 seats added for Impact games

After playing in front of 8,877 fans in its home opener on May 16, a team record for an inaugural match at Claude Robillard Stadium, the Montreal organization, in conjunction with the City of Montreal, have added extra general admission seating along the West side of the stadium.

Total capacity for Impact games will now be approximately 9,000 spectators.

“We are very happy that the City of Montreal has been able to accommodate us,” said Impact President Joey Saputo. “We have had very good crowds and it creates a great atmosphere, but for us it was also important that every one of our fans be able to watch the games in comfortable surroundings.”

Last season, the Impact had a record year in terms of attendance, with a peak of 9,414 spectators on August 13, an all-time club record. The Montreal team completed the year with an average attendance of 7,236 people per game, shattering the former club record of 5,178.

Only the Rochester Rhinos did better in 2003 in the A-League with an average of 10,169 spectators per game.

The trend seems to be continuing this season. With an average of 7,854 spectators per game after two home match-ups, the Impact is 2nd overall in the league.

Already, two regular-season games are practically sold out: the August 6 game against the Vancouver Whitecaps, and the August 29 match-up against the Richmond Kickers.
