The Impact remains undefeated in six games this season, with a 5-0-1 record. The club record is seven straight games without a loss. It was established in 1993 and has been tied several times since. The Impact also swept its two-game, home-and-home series with the Lynx, having beat Toronto 4-1 in Montreal, Friday.
The victory ensured head coach Nick DeSantis’ squad that it would finish the night on top of Eastern Conference standings with 16 points.
Mauro Biello, who picked up the assist on the first goal, played his 220th career game in an Impact uniform, a new team record, ahead of DeSantis.
"We had a strong start and Fred (Commodore) scored two great goals," said DeSantis. "There was a little bit of fatigue in the second half, but we never really let them get any good scoring chances. We used all of our subs, so everyone truly contributed, all the players can come out of this game with a sense of accomplishment."
It was Commodore’s second two-goal game this season. He did it for the first time on May 1st in Atlanta, in a 2-0 win against the Silverbacks. He has scored in each of the three games he has played so far this year, having also found the back of the net in Friday’s win against the Lynx, in Montreal. In fact, he has a total of five goals in only 112 minutes of play, the equivalent of a little more than one full game.
"This is my office, and when they ask me to go on the field, I have to do my job," said Commodore. "When I get a chance to play, my goal is to prove that I can produce."
The striker who was born in Ghana opened the scoring at the 14th minute of play. While Biello was carrying the ball on the right side, Commodore found open space down in front, where the Montreal captain gave him the ball. Commodore cut towards the net and beat Bryheem Hancock with a low shot.
At the 43rd minute, on a similar play but on the left side, Commodore took a pass from Patrick Leduc. This time, he beat the Lynx goalkeeper by brushing the ball just inside the far post.
Sutton made his best save on Joe Mattacchione after a little more than a half-hour of play, blocking a shot that was heading just under the crossbar. He ended up collecting his 32nd career shutout with Montreal. The team record of 34 shutouts belongs to Paolo Ceccarelli. Sutton and the Impact defence have yet to allow a goal on the road this year. DeSantis’ squad has a perfect 4-0-0 record in away games in 2004.
The Impact will be back at Claude Robillard Stadium on Sunday, June 6, as the Richmond Kickers will the visiting team (4 pm, RDS, CJAD, CKAC). It will be the Montreal squad’s last home game before a three-game road trip out in Western Canada.
