Bob Lilley will not be back in 2004

The 37-year-old American, whose two-year contract expired this fall, declined an offer for a contract extension.

"Bob was an integral part of this team’s renewal and one of the reasons for its success over the past two years. Under his leadership, the Impact became a winning team again. We are sad to see him go but we respect his decision," said Impact President Joey Saputo.

"From a professional standpoint, this is the toughest decision I’ve ever made," said Lilley. "I feel at this point it’s important for me to step back and evaluate what I want to do professionally and personally.

"I will have great memories of my time in Montreal and I am truly going to miss working with everyone involved with the club, especially the players."

Under Lilley, the Impact regained its status as one of the top teams in the A-League, as the Montreal club posted a cumulative record of 32-15-9 over the past two seasons — 16-9-3 in 2002 and 16-6-6 in 2003. Following the team’s performance this year, which placed it on top of the Northeast Division as well as first in overall league standings tied with the Milwaukee Wave United, Lilley was named A-League Coach of the Year.

The Impact took part in the playoffs both years under Lilley’s direction, but won only one playoff round, against the Charlotte Eagles in 2002. The Montreal squad was eliminated twice by the Rochester Raging Rhinos, in the second round in 2002 and in the first round this year.

Lilley’s system nonetheless allowed the Impact to win its first division title since 1997 and to post the best defence in the A-League, with 21 goals allowed in 28 games, in 2003. The team also won the Voyageurs Cup twice, as well as the Can-Am Cup this year.

"This team has made great strides and is well on its way to becoming the top club in the A-League. I consider myself fortunate to have been involved the past two seasons with Montreal," added Lilley. "It’s been a great opportunity for myself to be in such a great soccer environment."
