Talking books with Cameron Porter

Books-Porter

Your IMFC players are in offseason mode, spending some down time with family and working on getting re-energized for 2016. Impact Media asked players about one leisure activity. Today, we look at Cameron Porter and his love of books.
What’s your favourite book?
Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl. I think it’s been very influential for me. It’s about his struggles in life and how he found meaning. And you know, this year has been quite the struggle after a good up and then a bit of a down, so it’s been good to see some inspiration in there.
Do you read a lot of self-help books?
I did this year, mostly because of those struggles. The Power of Habit is also a good one I recommend, but honestly I just try to do 30-40 minutes of reading before going to bed.
What’s your favourite genre?
Definitely non-fiction. Anything with someone else’s expertise that I can gain knowledge from is the most important.
What are you looking for to read next?
Henry Kissinger – World Order. Really trying to understand what’s going on now.
Is there a book you read as a child that influenced you or affected you?
I definitely based most of my life and childhood on the fact that when I turned 12-13, I’d be getting news about becoming a wizard and was going to go to Hogwarts, so I was disappointed to find out it wasn’t true and it changed my life direction.
Aside from Harry Potter books, is there another fiction book you liked?
I like The Glass Castle. The Giver, another quality title, is a very interesting story about a community that will probably never exist. I think those are my two favourite fiction books right now.
Do you prefer paper back novels or hard cover novels?
I got a go for paper, eventually it starts smelling really good you just don’t get that smell with e-books.
When on the road and travelling, do you always have a book with you?
Yes, I always have a book with me because they don’t run out of batteries, which is good. Being the young one on the team, I feel like I get low priority on plugs when in the airports, so it’s definitely important to have something that doesn’t die on you.
Is there someone on the team that can discuss books with you?
I think if I tried, I’d probably get shutdown [laughs].
If there’s an author you could hang out with for a day, who would it be?
I would hang out with Alan Turing for a day just because I’m pretty fascinated by artificial intelligence and he’s pretty much the father of that, which would be an amazing experience.
