La communauté MLS s'était réunie à Newtown au Newtown Youth Academy pour une soirée bien spéciale, hier soir.
Près de 1500 résidents de Newtown ont assisté à « Soccer Night in Newtown », un événement mettant en vedette plusieurs joueurs et anciens joueurs, dont le gardien de l'Impact Troy Perkins, ainsi que Landon Donovan, Dwayne De Rosario, Alexi Lalas et Mia Hamm et qui n'avait qu'un seul objectif: offrir une soirée mémorable aux jeunes de cette ville et les faire oublier les tristes événements du 14 décembre dernier à Sandy Hook.
Le président du Houston Dynamo, Chris Canetti, qui a grandi à quelques kilomètres de Newtown dans la ville de Guilford, a eu l'idée d'organiser cet événement. « On pouvait sentir qu’un événement spécial allait se produire aujourd’hui, a-t-il dit lundi soir. Notre seul regret est de ne pas avoir pu l’organiser dans un plus grand endroit. Plusieurs autres personnes auraient voulu y prendre part. »
Nearly 1,500 Newtown residents showed up for “Soccer Night in Newtown,” an event that featured MLS players, including Impact keeper Troy Perkins as well as soccer greats Landon Donovan, Dwayne De Rosario, Alexi Lalas and Mia Hamm, all thrown together both hastily and somehow seamlessly in less than a month with one key goal in mind.
Offer the kids a few hours to forget Sandy Hook, and give them a night to remember.
“You could just sense that something special was going to happen today, and that the community had really opened up,” said Houston Dynamo president Chris Canetti, a native of nearby Guilford and the driving force behind the event. “The only thing we regret is that we wish we had a bigger place. There were just so many people that wanted to be a part of this.”
