Road to playoffs: Chase gets hotter

United beats Fire, Impact now four points out

With the two big matches in the Eastern Conference on Wednesday, some members of the Impact were most likely scoreboard watching on Wednesday night.

HIGHLIGHTS: DC 4, CHI 2

D.C. United (5th) beat the Chicago Fire (4th) 4-2 last night, leaving the Impact outside looking in by four points.

United has 40 points in 24 games played, Chicago has 41 points in 25 games played. The Impact, at 27 games played, has amassed 36 points and sits in sixth place.

In addition, the onze montrealais are no longer just looking ahead at who they need to catch in the standings, but they have to look behind them as well. The Columbus Crew beat Toronto FC Wednesday by a 2-1 score, pushing them to 33 points in just 23 games played.

“You can’t help but look at the standings and hope that other teams help you out a little,” said Impact midfielder Patrice Bernier. “But at the end of the day, the only thing we can control is the way we play, so we have to take it one game at a time. Now, our priority is to get a good result against D.C. United on Saturday.”

The Impact plays Chicago, D.C United and Columbus over its final stretch of games, which can help the boys in blue make their final push for the playoffs by winning the all-important six point games.
