Jesse Marsch : “Guys are committed to doing things right”

Following months of preparation, players finally take the pitch

MONTREAL - Head coach Jesse Marsch has probably been waiting for this day since his arrival in July 2011. After months of talking about it, the Montreal Impact has begun its 2012 pre-season campaign on Monday morning, at Marie-Victorin Sports Complex.

“There is a lot of excitement in Montreal for this team. I’m happy that the fans are passionate about this team. There was good energy in the stands.”

During the 90-minute practice, the players were put through a series of physical tests before playing an eight-aside scrimmage. Despite being the very first practice, the ex-American international was satisfied with his new players.

“Everybody is excited to be here," said Marsch. “It’s good to see, and some of the soccer that was played wasn’t bad either.”

The Impact gaffer is aware that the building process is one that will take time. “Becoming a team does not happen overnight. This is going to take months, but I think there are a lot of guys who are committed to doing this the right way. We built a group of competitive guys.”

The coach had good words for forward Brian Ching, who was at practice on Monday morning. The 32-year-old had been selected by the Impact during the Expansion Draft.

“He’s on our team," explained Marsch. “I’ve watched him play and I know he still wants to be a winner and help this team.”
