THE DECISIVE MATCH IN LESS THAN 48 HOURS

PRESS RELEASE: October 15, 2009

MONTREAL – In less than 48 hours, the Montreal Impact will face the Vancouver Whitecaps in the second leg match of the USL First Division championship final. The ultimate matchup will be played Saturday at Saputo Stadium at 2:30 pm. “We are a few hours away from the decisive match of the first all-Canadian championship final,” noted Impact and Saputo Stadium President Joey Saputo. We are thrilled to be able to present this matchup between two teams that share a true rivalry, which will continue on Saturday.”

“We are very happy to once again confirm the enthusiasm for soccer in Montreal,” added Joey Saputo. “There will be an extraordinary ambiance and atmosphere in our stadium. We will get a unique opportunity to clinch a third championship in front of our fans, who are certainly the best in the league.”

The match will be played in front of a sellout crowd, all 13,034 tickets having been purchased. The Impact invites all soccer enthusiasts and Impact fans, who did not get a chance to buy a ticket, to live the game at one of 47 Cage aux Sports across Quebec.

The match will be broadcast live on Radio-Canada Television and will also be presented live on the radio on CKAC Sports and THE TEAM 990, and on TV on FOX Sports World.

The game will be preceded by a tailgate party presented by CKAC Sports, featuring animation, music and door prizes. Doors will open at 12:30 pm. A bandana autographed by all Impact players will be offered to the first 5,000 spectators. A special edition championship scarf will also be on sale at the boutique.

“The players are aware that playing in the final is something that doesn’t come often,” added team captain Mauro Biello, who could be raising the cup for a third time Saturday. “We are lucky to play this match at home, so we must capitalize on the situation and do everything we can to win this championship for our fans. This is an opportunity that should not be missed.”

“The team is focused but at the same time excited at less than 48 hours from the last game of the year,” noted midfielder Rocco Placentino. “This will be our last half and we want to make the whole province of Quebec and ourselves proud because we deserve it. I hope I’ll be able to lift that cup for the first time Saturday.”

The last USL-1 individual honours were unveiled Thursday afternoon at Saputo Stadium. Puerto Rico Islanders defender Cristian Arrieta clinched the Defender of the Year and MVP titles. The Coach of the Year award, for which Montreal Impact head coach Marc Dos Santos was finalist, was handed to Gavin Wilkinson, from the Portland Timbers.
